depending on what dist you are running or if you compiled your kernel
yourself, you will need to enable support for high memory , see:
CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G
for example in debian you can install the 686 version of the kernel
which has support for large ammounts of memory. i beleive the same is
true for redhat/fedora as well.
