Got the same issue with the standard debian sarge kernel (2.6.8).
Upgrading to the 2.6.12 vanilla kernel solves this issue for me and i'm
quite happy with it.
We are using VMWare Server on this machine, only our 2850 are serving
the xen stuff. but i don't think that will be the issue.
Currently our firmware-version on this card is: 2.8-0 [6092]
I never tried a never version.

try to get an Perc4, we are more happier with it (in the 2850).
Removing will not be the best solution cause you will loose some
performance with the cache ram on the controller and the easy going with
the raid-bios compared to the software raid.
