The CERC ATA 100 controller isn't supported by any linux kernels past
2.4.27 so if you make a boot disk with that or older it will work.

I kept having problems with the driver locking up the IO system during
heavy load, so after fighting with it for months I finally gave up,
loaded 2.6.16 on the box and moved to software raid and it's been very
stable and performs well.

I guess the moral of the story is that good software raid is better than
crappy hardware raid.
