FW: ResierFS limit on number of directories in a directory?

I'm trying to determine the maximum number of directories allowed under
ext3
Days of googling have turned up little.

I believe we have reached this limit in a flat file system on ext3
(32,000?)

Does anyone know what this limitation is in ReiserFS, or perhaps another
ES3 compatible FS?

Performance? Issue?

Will be running off PE2650, a Perc4/DC & PowerVault 22Xs
(General comments about this hardware setup accepted)
