That's correct--the speaker is just behind that grill, though it doesn't
look much like a speaker.
See http://hentosh.com/pe2800_panel.jpg. The white letters that you
can't quite read on the PC board above the speaker read "SPKR".

Best guess.. a grill to increase airflow to the parts behind it.
