may I suggest SuSE 8.2/ with kernel.org's 2.4.25?
will soon to play with 2.6.5...

am running 6650s, 1655s, lots of non-dell dual xeon boxes.

very fast.
Very stable.
have never been hosed by online package update.
a little different /etc layout compared to redhat 
the ncurses  tools (yast, you)  are easy.
