Just to report a success.
On a PE 2600 with PERC 4 and two hd in RAID 1,
thanks to Scott Kveton's iso, Debian (woody with 2.4.25 kernel) was
installed at my first attempt

Yes, most probably that's the problem, not Debian ;-)
