run # ldconfig -v , to be sure that all is right.

in theory rh uses in the boot file a longer name -> initrd-2.4.9-e.27.img
so it must be "mkinitrd -v /boot/initrd-2.4.9-e.27.img 2.4.9-e.27"

And again, you must verify /etc/lilo.conf or /etc/grub.conf
and /etc/modules.conf
