ah.. i didn't realise you needed to run irqbalance on a smp machine
if it already seemed to be sharing the load across both cpus.  just
from looking at /proc/interrupts i made the (incorrect) assumption
that it must already have been doing that binding as the irqs were
'split' across both cpus.  just FYI the server is RH 7.3 running
2.4.18-27.7.x (for the stack bug reason)

the next version of the server will have 5 interfaces ( 4 gigE and
one 100Mbit) so that'll be interesting.  i knew i should have tried
to afford that quad cpu box..

good to know.. ok, i'll make a note of this.  does irqbalance also come
with RHEL/ES3 ?
