I asume you were referring to Search The Fantastic Web.

quick steps in what I do.

unpack the source and cd to it.
make mrproper (making sure it's clean)
make menuconfig (if possible import the old .config file)
make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install && make 

check /etc/lilo.conf and add a entry.
run lilo and reboot.

If the new one doesn't boot you can always choose the old one that is still 
defined in lilo.conf on start up.


It might just be your lucky day, if you only knew.
