I have PE1650's running RH80 just fine.  You might try a clean install.

Make sure that all APM stuff and/or auto-start/stop times are disabled
in the BIOS. Other than that - I use Debian! ;^)

I have a PE1650 running Redhat Linux 8.0 fully updated. 
My system shutdowns by itself with no apparent reason, the only message
i can extract from the log is
received SIGNAL 15 system shutting down.
The shutdowns are unpredictable.
