Hi There,

I am trying to build Linux 2.4.19 on Dell 1650. The kernel built successfully, but
when booting the machine using the new kernel, got the following:

kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-8, errno = 2
VFS: cannot open root device "803" or 08:03
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:03

I am using lilo, which looks like:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux-Chen
boot=/dev/sda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
linear

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.18-14
        label=linux
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-14.img
        read-only
        append="root=LABEL=/"

image=/boot/vmlinux-2.4.19-Chen
        label=linux-Chen
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.18-14.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/sda3
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Your help is greatly appreciated!

Chen Ding
