Partitioning, LVM, RAID

Hello,
I am interested in others views on how a systems disks should be
configured. My major concerns are setting up a system now, that will
need major work to upgrade. What should I be avoiding? What's been
useful? What's a waste of time (I was looking at using LVM on a hardware
RAID 5 system). Thanks!
