Trying to get the Python tape backup to work

There was an issue with firmware on the dds4 tape drives. Check our website
and there is a utility to check the firmware in Linux and if it isn't
correct there is a flash utility to run in Linux. The issue was it would
tar to the tape but would hang on any read operations. By the way if you
are looking for a driver and device it doesn't apply in Linux. Just use the
tar -tvf /dev/st0 /yourfilestobackup to use the tape drive.

What is the output of the "mt -f /dev/st0 status" command?
