What does /proc/net/PRO_LAN_Adapters say? Which kernel version are you
using? Intel's website claims to require version 4.2 or higher of the
e1000 driver. Redhat 7.3 didn't ship with this, but recent errata
kernels have it.

$ uname -a
Linux prawn 2.4.18-3 #1 Thu Apr 18 07:37:53 EDT 2002 i686 unknown
$ cat /proc/net/PRO_LAN_Adapters/eth0/Driver_Version
4.1.7

$ uname -a
Linux polaris 2.4.18-17.7.x #1 Tue Oct 8 13:33:14 EDT 2002 i686 unknown
$ cat /proc/net/PRO_LAN_Adapters/eth0/Driver_Version
4.3.2-k1 NAPI (020618)
