If  kupdated crashes then it is very well possible that all disk IO is
impossible which means that only cached IO works.  You can see this that
the first part of the ssh handshake still works and does not return
connection refused.

eg. normal commands like ls and such work but as soon as you want to run
something like lilo or sync it hangs.

My case was caused by a bad ram DIMM.
