Why to upgrade the linux kernel?

A "uname -r" will show you the currently running kernel version.

BTW, although it may seem like a daunting task, downloading and building
a custom linux kernel is not really that difficult, and IMHO it leads to
systems which are far more stable than any RedHat kernel release.  Not
to mention you can stay closer to the current Linux kernel than RedHat
