IO-APIC not being used on DELL 6450.

I've installed Caldera 3.1 Server on one of my 6450 boxes and although
the boot messages report finding IO-APIC settings, when I look at
/proc/interrupts it reports all devices using XT-PIC, as if "noapic" had
been specified on boot (which it wasn't).

Here's the sort of thing I see about the IO-APIC(s) begin detected...

Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: I/O APIC #2 Version 17 at 0xFEC00000.
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: I/O APIC #3 Version 17 at 0xFEC01000.
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: Int: type 3, pol 1, trig 1, bus 18, IRQ
00, APIC ID 2, APIC INT 00
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: Int: type 0, pol 0, trig 0, bus 18, IRQ
01, APIC ID 2, APIC INT 01
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: Int: type 0, pol 0, trig 0, bus 18, IRQ
06, APIC ID 2, APIC INT 06
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: Int: type 0, pol 0, trig 0, bus 18, IRQ
08, APIC ID 2, APIC INT 08
Jun 20 21:59:22 dell6450 kernel: Int: type 0, pol 0, trig 0, bus 18, IRQ
09, APIC ID 2, APIC INT 09

Here's the /proc/interrupts output :

Is there any way to force the system to use the IO-APIC(s) that it
detects?

I know there was a problem previously with 2.2.14 not handling the
IO-APIC(s) on these boxes, but I hadn't heard of a problem with 2.4.x
(specifically 2.4.2).
