Dell Studio 1558 w/ core i7 + radeon hd5400 series, some issues

I have a Dell Studio 1558 here and some issues with it. I guess most
issues are due to missing kernel support for some peculiarities of this box.
1.) Battery only holds for about 2 hours. Is that quite normal for the
radeon / i7 edition? The radeon card is already set to its lowest
setting (echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile).
2.) Set charger behavior to "disabled/enabled" in GNU/Linux, any way to
do it? If not, would it be possible to get the specs of that feature so
a kernel / acpi / whatever hacker may have a look there? Hibernate and
changing that in the BIOS works, but it is kinda annoying.
3.) Display brightness not changeable in GNU/Linux. The hardware keys
work and plugging in ac-power or running only on batteries does change
the brightness. Not reliable (sometimes it changes from low to high when
disconnecting the power-cord or the other way around
I run Debian GNU/Linux "sid" amd64 on that box, with currently kernel
3.2.18-1 (debian package linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64), gnome 3 or mate
(did change to mate a few days back).
Any hints or ideas about the issues? Any help is greatly appreciated.
