Hi Tom:

I've seen that aplay has issues with HDMI audio even when you specify the device. Try using the GNOME control panel applet, or using a gstreamer based app and it should work after you enable IEC958. Alternatively, passing the device in mplayer should work.

Subject: HDMI audio on 1525, silent
I get a great picture via the HDMI out on my 1525 laptop, direct to my
TV, but there is no audio.
The TV is fine playing over HDMI from the cable box :-)

$ aplay -l

$ aplay -D hw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Logout_new.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/KDE_Logout_new.wav' : Signed 16 bit

Warning: rate is not accurate (requested = 22050Hz, got = 32000Hz)
         please, try the plug plugin
#plays silence
$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/KDE_Logout_new.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/KDE_Logout_new.wav' : Signed 16 bit
Little Endian, Rate 22050 Hz, Stereo
#plays noise from laptop speakers

It would appear the output is muted, but I can't see where.... kmix
does not have a check mark in the 'IEC958' box, for instance, and
alsamixer shows the 'iec948' output at not muted, but volume level 0,
and I can't adjust it up.
