No sound after upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04

It isn't jut Ubuntu right now.  I've been trying to build a media
machine (using Ubuntu at first, then Mythbuntu, then Fedora, then Arch)
and past v2.6.29 of the kernel sound just doesn't work.  After three or
four months of banging my head off the wall, I've pretty much given up
on using Linux for the media machine.  I use my laptop to play stuff and
the media machine is probably going to become my wife's new Windows
workstation in a week or two.
