No sound after upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04

My upgrade of my Inspiron 1420 from ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 went pretty
smoothly. Thanks to Scott Purcell and others on this list for the
advice.

I did not experience the problem with the locales package.

But now I have no sound. The volume control says "No volume control
GStreamer plugins and/or devices found."

I tried the instructions here:
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_8.04/Issues/No_Sound_After_Distribution_Or_Kernel_Upgrade

But they do not work.

Here are my results:
.........
bob at dell-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg -r hsfmodem
[sudo] password for bob:

Removing hsfmodem ...

Any ideas?
