I did try.  Supposedly a patch here
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/2006-October/018926.html)
is supposed to add i965 support to 915resolution, but I still get
"Intel chipset detected.  However, 915resolution was unable to
determine the chipset type." in response.

What's strange is that my Xorg.log shows a number of 0x0 modes with
all info that has been zeroed out, even though it does show widescreen
modelines elsewhere.  I'm thinking something like 915resolution is
exactly what I need, perhaps I should try contacting its maintainer.
