Do you have Intel Graphics? Which Linux distribution/version are you using?
If Intel, have you tried the modesetting branch of xorg? It looks like Fedora 7 will have this, so it might take care of this problem. Otherwise, you can download and try it out to see if it works. Can you posts your /var/log/Xorg.0.log from both the working and non-working BIOS?
In the past, I have seen something similar on my D500 laptop, but only when I used the Fn-F8 key to try to switch between LCD and CRT, and only on older versions of X.
