As I thought, it turned out to be very simple: the problem was not with my 
laptop, it was with my wireless router at home: I booted into Windows to 
check the connection parameters under Windows, and found I could not connect.  
So I went into the router configuration, disabled all security, and found I 
could connect without problems.  Then I rebooted into Linux, and was able to 
connect with wireless immediately.  I have since connected to a different 
access point with no problem.

I looked at the link you gave me.  I must say it's a lot easier to do this 
kind of thing on Gentoo than on Debian.
