Sound on D610 laptop

  I had an odd problem with a D510 where the sound worked on the jack 
only. Not though the built-in speakers (I don't have a dock). Thought 
the hardware was faulty. Couldn't try windows as it wasn't installed. 
(I'd answered No to the MS EULA :-)
  I eventually used Dell diag boot CD and the speakers worked.

  Much fiddling with the ALSA mixer later, on the D510 at least, I found 
the speakers were connected to what ALSA thought was the 'line out' and 
line-out was muted.

  So connect up some speakers and fire up the mixer app in advanced mode 
and unmute every output you can find, no matter what the App calls it. 
With any luck you will find what device it's attached to, unmute it and 
get your sound.
