RTC trouble on some Dell laptops

Hi there,
I have just bought a Dell XPS M1210, and was looking to dual-boot some kind
of Linux on it.
I had a look at Ubuntu (my distro of choice for a desktop) and found this
bug report which cooled of my enthusiasm quite a bit.
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/43745
It seems that hwclock writes something to the rtc chip, and some dell
laptops do not like that.
Is this bug specific to Ubuntu kernel/hwclock implementation ? Has it been
seen with other distros, like FC6 ?
Any comments will be welcome, so I can put this new toy to use without
windows :-)
Cheers,
Robert von Bismarck
