libsmbios and Poweredge 840

Is it possible to control the back fan speed on a PE840 using libsmbios?

The machine would be OK in a server room or a noisy office, but is very 
obtrusive in a quiet office because the back fan won't spin below 
1800rpm. Obviously unnecessarily fast since the processor only goes up 
to 45 degrees without the fan running at all when the system is idle.

I'm running Debian Etch if it matters: Ubuntu's RAID1 support is badly 
broken in that it's impossible to boot with one drive missing. Debian 
'just works'.

Any advice gratefully received otherwise the PE840 will be dumped for 
whatever I can get for it.
