Sorry .. actually I read "Any reason we couldnt just use A standard spec 
file?" instead of MY .. like in "Any reason not to pull magic in the spec 
file instead of the configure/make " .. dumb me ..

Anyways, the answer to that is:
* distro specific packaging policies
* which require the use of some distro specific macros
* and so on ..
