You are welcome.

As for your xset problem, I had a similar problem on my laptop. The dellLcdBrightness can only adjust the level, not turn it on or off. For me, I added a call to xset from the acpi script which fixed the problem. I'll dig out the laptop and check the exact syntax.

Subject: Dell backlight

Dear Michael and libsmbios crew,

I just bought a D420 laptop, and i was scouring the web for a way to
adjust the backlight via a command line program in linux.... After
reading some posts between you and Matthew Garrett i installed
libsmbios, the kernel stuff and ran
  ./dellLcdBrightness

it worked like a charm!

i have another question.... when using X, "xset dpms force off", seems
to only blank the screen, leaving the backlight on... is there a way
to make dellLcdBrightness do this?

thanks so much for libsmbios and dellLcdBrighness, and for the time
you have already taken to help me.

Brian.
