Simple Firmware Query

Thanks for the suggestion. I have no plans on putting anything in place like this. My focus right now is getting firmware-tools integrated as tightly as possible into the native Linux change management frameworks, eg. yum, apt, et al. There are some other smart people at Dell working on the problem of getting something similar set up for Windows, but since I have long since let my MCSE+I (For NT 4.0!) expire, I'm not really focused on that at all.

On the other hand...

If somebody could show how this would be useful for Linux, *and* propose an architecture and develop some sample code, I would be happy to help set something like this up.

And finally...

The windows guys *do* have an XML-based catalog that gives something similar, but it isnt a web-service: ftp://ftp.dell.com/catalog. I think it plugs into some of the Dell tools that are available, such as content manager. http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/Content+Manager?t=anon

Subject: Simple Firmware Query

It would be nice if the Dell firmware repository data was available in XML format or via an XML Web Service like http://www.webservicex.net/WCF/webServices.aspx. The idea is to make it more accessible for other operating systems such as Microsoft Windows. A query for Model=Optiplex 755&Firmware=BIOS would return the URL for the newest bios.hdr files for that model. That's simplified, since it should use standard naming conventions such as Vendor/VEN, Device/DEV, Subsystem/SUBSYS, and Version/VERSION, or a Model and Firmware type.
If there is already something like this in place, I'm not aware of it and would like to know.
