While most Dell systems sold over the past few years are supported by
firmware-tools, a few, including the Inspiron 1501, are not (yet?).
The Inspiron 1501 BIOS does not include the "Dell Remote BIOS Update"
feature that firmware-tools presently requires.

You can use biosdisk (http://linux.dell.com/projects.shtml#biosdisk)
to generate a FreeDOS-based grub-bootable image , or floppy or CD-ROM,
with the BIOS files posted on support.dell.com.

Thanks,
Matt
