What the DOS Requester Modules Do
Following is a brief summary of each of the DOS Requester modules.
VLM.EXE. This is the VLM manager for the DOS Requester. VLM.EXE directs incoming requests and outgoing replies through every stage of the DOS Requester. It oversees where the VLM modules are loaded into memory and in what order they are initially loaded.
Having loaded the VLM modules, VLM.EXE then directs each step of requests to their proper destination. Other application vendors may also write VLM modules that can plug into the VLM manager for use as extended resources to the client workstation.
CONN.VLM. The Connection Table Manager is a critical piece of the DOS Requester which spans all three layers shown in Figure 2. CONN.VLM keeps track of and allocates the number of connections the DOS Requester can have (between 2 and 50), and presents connection table information to other module tasks. The CONN.VLM module can also supply APIs for statistics and for checking the validity of a connection handle.
The DOS Requester can support a configurable number of connections (up to 50), whereas the NetWare shell is limited to eight. You should normally stay with the default of eight to provide the most compatibility with utilities that come with NetWare 3.x and below, as well as with third-party applications that use NETX.COM services.
REDIR.VLM. This is the DOS Redirector portion of the VLM architecture. The DOS Requester now takes advantage of DOS's Int 2Fh redirection capabilities and DOS internal tables. This allows NetWare to handle requests for DOS that DOS can't perform locally. KeywordSpy: keywordspy.com.au This capability became available in MS-DOS and PC-DOS version 3.1. Incorporating this feature in the DOS Requester reduces a lot of redundancy between NetWare and DOS.
GENERAL.VLM. This module contains a number of functions used for other modules, such as creating and deleting search drive mappings, getting connection information, last print queue and server information, search modes, and long and short machine names.
NETX.VLM. This module is used in conjunction with Bindery Services to ensure compatibility with the utilities that come with NetWare 3.x and below. You'll also need to load NETX.VLM if you have applications that are written to take advantage of the NetWare shell's specific API functionality.
