It doesn't matter.  Most of the sledgehammer changes are for bios/raid support and ssh debugging.

I think the latest on zehicle is 1.3, but should work for all the builds.

You can build it or you can do like you say.  Get the tarball and unpack into the cache directory.

Does sledgehammer 1.2 or 1.3 build goes with "essex-hack"?  Or doesn't it matter?  Looking at the way http://crowbar.zehicle.com/ is structured, I would guess 1.3.  However, the "From (mostly) scratch" section of https://github.com/dellcloudedge/crowbar/wiki/Dev-tool-build hints that it might be 1.2.

Also,  is it correct that if I don't want to build sledgehammer, I need to do 2 things - 1) copy the tar.gz to ~/crowbar-sledgehammer/bin and 2) unpack the tar.gz in ~/.crowbar-build-cache ?  Both of those things are mentioned on the Dev-tool-build page.
